A powerful debut marred by a really overly complicated, dragged out ending. I loved this book up until the last quarter but then it really felt like the author was trying to hard to keep up the complications and confusion he'd established earlier on. Instead, what he needed to do was wrap it up smartly and well. The result: a bad ending. We did not need further complications on the level provided. The writing is very strong. The noir sensibilities so well done. The parallel universes unfold with powerful worldbuilding. The mystery elements are well laid out. The characters are strong, although not very likeable (the other major fault). And the switching POVs are well handled, with the exception, that a heroic voice can be hard to find in their midst at times. Still, highly anticipated and I really wanted the ending to live up to the start. It didn't.
